On February 25th Aiden Saunders was taken to the hospital out of concern for an unresolving virus. It was immediately discovered that he was very ill with findings indicative of severe heart failure. He was admitted to the Mott ICU, where he remained on several IV drips in hopes of regaining heart function. Unfortunately, this did not occur. On March 9th, he was taken to the operating room for placement of a Ventricular Assist Device to help both sides of his heart contract. Intra-operatively, it was discovered that his heart is very weak and doctors recommended a heart transplant. On March 15th, he was listed priority 1A on the cardiac transplant list. Prayers were answered only a few hours later when a perfect match was identified! On March 16th, Aiden underwent successful transplant, signifying his "2nd birthday".
The Saunders family has been overwhelmed by the love, prayers and support of family and friends during this difficult time. However, Aiden's journey is not complete, but rather entering the next phase. These coming days will be critical in making sure that Aiden's body doesn't reject his new heart, while remaining in the hospital. We ask for continued help, as they face several weeks of balancing hospital visits with caring for their 3 daughters. Spending time with Aiden has taken priority over working, house cleaning and cooking. Financial assistance towards these ends would greatly help them through these next few months.
